Season 1 plot was adapted from the first novel by Jeff Lindsay's "Dexter" series, Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Seasons that followed featured news adventures.

Orphaned at the age of three and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter was adopted by a police officer in Miami named Harry Morgan who recognized Dexter sociopathic tendencies and taught him to channel his passion for the taste of the macabre murder by giving an interpretation Directorate kill people who deserve it.
